Tesla + smart home FAQ

Short answers to the questions we hear most, with links to the full guides.

Can Alexa (instead of Siri) warm up my Tesla?

Yes, with a workaround. Tesla has no official Alexa skill. Third-party services such as Tessie offer one: link your Tesla account in their app, enable the skill in the Alexa app, then say something like "Alexa, ask Tessie to warm up my car". It's a paid service and isn't made by Tesla or Amazon. Setup: Alexa guide.

Is a Tesla a HomeKit accessory?

No. The car doesn't appear in the Home app. On iPhone, the Tesla app adds Siri and Shortcuts actions, and Shortcuts can run Home scenes, which is how the two connect. See Shortcuts recipes.

Does Google Home work with Tesla?

Not officially. Google shut down third-party voice apps (Conversational Actions) on June 13, 2023. Today, Tesla control from Google Home goes through IFTTT plus a service like Tessie or TeslaFi, or through Home Assistant. See the Google Home guide.

Can my garage open automatically when I arrive?

Yes. Use the car's HomeLink or Smart Garage features if your car has them, or an Apple Home arrival automation. Google Home asks for a PIN that routines can't enter. See Garage and Automations.

Can I pre-heat the house when I leave work?

Yes. Create a Shortcuts personal automation that runs when you leave work and sets your thermostat. Recipe: 11. Leave Work: Pre-Heat the House.

Can I control EV charging with a smart plug?

No, don't. Consumer smart plugs aren't meant for long, heavy EV charging loads. Use the car's charging schedule instead. See Off-peak charging.

Can my Tesla charge only from my solar panels?

With a Powerwall, yes. Tesla's Charge on Solar feature needs a Powerwall with solar on site and current software. See Solar & Powerwall.

Do I need a home hub?

For automations, yes. Apple Home needs a HomePod or Apple TV for automations and remote access. Alexa and Google Home use an Echo or Nest device. See Hubs.

Can my Model 3 or Model Y power my house in an outage?

Yes, with Powershare Home Backup and the right gear. You need Powershare Support enabled on the car, a Powerwall (Powerwall 3 works now), and a Gen 3 or Universal Wall Connector on the same site and Wi-Fi. New U.S./Puerto Rico 3/Y orders from Oct 1, 2026 onward qualify; some earlier cars do too. Steps: Solar & Powerwall — Powershare.

My Wall Connector dropped off Wi-Fi. How do I reconnect it?

Make it broadcast its own Wi-Fi, then point it at your home network. Unplug the car, hold the charge-handle button for about 5 seconds (or flip its breaker off and on), join the TeslaWallConnector network with the password on your Quickstart Guide, then pick your 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi in the Tesla One app or at 192.168.92.1. Steps: Charging — Wall Connector Wi-Fi.

Should I turn on Cabin Overheat Protection?

Yes, if you park outside on hot days. Tap Controls > Safety > Cabin Overheat Protection, or use the Climate screen in the Tesla app. Pick No A/C (fan only, less energy) or On (A/C above 105 °F / 40 °C, or your chosen temperature). It runs for up to 12 hours after you leave. It’s not a pet or child mode. Steps: Climate — Cabin Overheat Protection.

How do I get a warm Tesla every winter morning without losing range?

Set a Precondition schedule and leave the car plugged in. Tap Controls > Schedule (or Schedule in the Tesla app), pick Home, set your leave time and days under Precondition, and turn on Repeat Weekly. Tesla says that when the car is plugged in, preconditioning uses outside power instead of the battery. Steps: Climate — Scheduled Precondition.

Real-world example

Summarized in our own words. Links go to the original posts.

An r/HomeKit user asked whether Apple Home has a "heading home" trigger to start heating the house. Commenters explained that there's no built-in trigger, but a Shortcuts automation for leaving work (or arriving at a spot on your route) can run a "Heading Home" scene. You can also just ask Siri to run it.
