Tesla + Alexa: connect your Tesla to your smart home

⬇ Download free PDF: Tesla + Alexa Guide

Tesla doesn't offer an official Alexa skill today. The old "My Tesla" skill is reported dead, so voice control of the car from Echo devices goes through third-party services.

Can Alexa (instead of Siri) warm up my Tesla?

Yes, with a workaround. Tesla has no official Alexa skill, but third-party Tesla apps such as Tessie offer an Alexa skill. Link your Tesla account in the app, enable its skill in the Alexa app, then say something like “Alexa, ask Tessie to warm up my car” (climate on / precondition). It’s a paid third-party service, so check current pricing, and it’s not made by Tesla or Amazon. See the preconditioning by voice routine below for step-by-step setup.

Ways to connect

Tessie Alexa skill (most direct)

Enable the Tessie skill (US, UK, Canada, Australia) and link your Tessie account, then say "Alexa, ask Tessie Control to start climate". Tessie is a paid app: Tessie $6.99/mo, Tessie Pro $12.99/mo, with a free trial. Tessie warns that some skills may not work on Alexa+ yet.

Home Assistant

Home Assistant's Tesla Fleet integration can expose the car to Alexa through Home Assistant's Alexa support. Powerful, but a technical setup.

Tesla app on your phone

The Tesla app itself has no Alexa link, so keep using it (or Siri Shortcuts on iPhone) for anything a skill doesn't cover.

Example routines, step by step

1. Preconditioning by voice

  1. Enable the Tessie skill in the Alexa app and link your account.
  2. Alexa app > More > Routines > + > When This Happens > Voice: "Get the car ready".
  3. Add Action > Custom: "ask tessie control to start climate".
  4. Choose the Echo device and save. Say "Alexa, get the car ready".

2. Charge-status announcement

  1. New routine > When This Happens > Schedule: 9:00 PM daily.
  2. Add Action > Custom: "ask tessie control to get charge level" (Tessie lists "get charge level" as a command).
  3. Choose the kitchen Echo so it announces the result.

3. Garage on arrival (with limits)

  1. Link your garage opener's skill (for example Meross) and enable "Open" in the Alexa device settings with a 4-digit voice PIN.
  2. Alexa asks for the PIN every time you open by voice, so a fully automatic arrival open isn't supported. Use the Tesla car's HomeLink/Smart Garage (if available) or the opener's own app geofence.
  3. Closing usually works without a PIN, so an evening "Close the garage" routine is easy.

A Tesla Motors Club thread notes that the old "My Tesla" Alexa skill stopped working after a Tesla software change. Members point to Tessie's skill instead, or to exposing the car to Alexa through Home Assistant.

Meross explains that "Open" is turned off by default for garage doors in Alexa. You enable it in device settings and set a 4-digit voice PIN that Alexa asks for every time.

Tessie's help center shows how to make a custom phrase like "Alexa, get the car ready": an Alexa routine with a Custom action, "ask tessie control to start climate".
