A home hub runs automations while you're away, enables remote control and is required for Matter and Thread devices to work their best.
How to choose
- Pick a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K: both are Apple home hubs and Thread border routers.
- Already use Hue lights? The Hue Bridge brings them into Apple Home.
- For Aqara Zigbee sensors, the Aqara Hub M3 bridges them over Matter.

Apple Home setup, step by step
- Set up the HomePod mini or Apple TV with the same Apple Account you use for the Home app; it becomes a home hub automatically.
- On Apple TV: Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room, to assign it to a room.
- Check hub status: Home app > Add (+)/More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges.
- Then add bridges (Hue Bridge, Aqara M3) with Add Accessory.
Tesla tie-ins
- Without a hub, Tesla-arrival automations in the Home app won't run. Set up a hub first.
- A HomePod in the garage lets you say "Hey Siri, open the garage" as you unload.

An Apple Home creator uses a HomePod mini every day for Siri, automations and Thread coverage, not just as a speaker.
One poster points out that Apple TV 4K works as a Thread border router, a Matter controller and a home hub all at once, a role many owners never turn on.
A user warns that a hub that travels (like an iPad) can't process HomeKit Secure Video while it's away. Use a hub that stays home.
