1. Garage opens as your Tesla pulls in

A HomeKit garage controller lets the Home app open the door when you arrive, so you don't need HomeLink.

What you need

Setup

  1. Install the Meross opener and add it to the Home app (Add (+) > Add Accessory, scan the code).
  2. Turn on Share My Location on the iPhone you use for your home: Settings > [your name] > Find My.
  3. In the Home app tap Add (+) > Add Automation > People Arrive. Pick yourself, keep the location as Home, and set a time window if you like. Tap Next.
  4. Select the garage door, set it to Open, then tap Done.

Tip: Location automations for doors and locks can ask you to confirm on iPhone, depending on iOS settings. Add the garage to Control Center or the Home widget so you can open it with one tap from the driver's seat.

2. Scheduled preconditioning for your commute

The Tesla app can have the cabin and battery ready by the time you leave, with no Shortcut needed.

What you need

Setup

  1. In the Tesla app, open Schedule (needs app v4.34.5 or later).
  2. Choose the location, for example Home.
  3. Tap Precondition and set the ready-by time and the days. Tap Create.
  4. Stay plugged in overnight so preconditioning uses grid power instead of your battery.

Tip: Tesla recommends setting your charge to finish at departure time, so the battery doesn't cool down and need warming again.

3. "Hey Siri, warm up the car"

Make a voice command that starts climate control from your iPhone or Apple Watch.

What you need

Your iPhone with the Tesla app (and the Shortcuts app).

Setup

  1. Open the Shortcuts app and tap + to make a new shortcut.
  2. Search for "Tesla" and add Precondition Vehicle. Set it to On and pick your vehicle.
  3. Optionally add Set Temperature and choose a temperature.
  4. Rename the shortcut "Warm up the car". Say "Hey Siri, warm up the car".

Tip: Action names come from the Tesla app and can change between versions. Search "Tesla" in the action list to see what your version has.

4. Cold-morning auto pre-heat

A Time of Day automation checks the weather and only heats the car when it's cold.

What you need

Setup

  1. Shortcuts > Automation > + > Time of Day. Set 7:00 AM on weekdays.
  2. Add Get Current Weather (Current Location), then If (Temperature is less than 40 °F).
  3. Inside the If block, add the Tesla action Precondition Vehicle (On). Optionally add Defrost.
  4. Choose Run Immediately or turn off Ask Before Running, so it runs without asking.

Tip: An Eve Weather sensor gives you your own outdoor reading in the Home app. You can use that instead in a Home automation.

5. "Leaving home" scene

When the last person leaves, lights turn off, the thermostat goes to away and doors lock.

Setup

  1. Make a scene called "Away": Home app > Add (+) > Add Scene. Add lights (off), the thermostat (away temperature) and the lock (locked).
  2. Home app > Add (+) > Add Automation > People Leave > When the last person leaves.
  3. Select the Away scene and tap Done.
  4. In Shortcuts, add a Leave automation for Home that runs the Tesla Lock action as a backup.

Tip: You need a home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) for automations to run while you're away.

6. Porch and garage lights when you pull in at night

Arriving after sunset turns on the exterior lights.

What you need

Setup

  1. Add Hue lights (through the Hue Bridge) and an Eve Motion sensor to the Home app.
  2. Add Automation > People Arrive > set the time to "At night" (sunset to sunrise).
  3. Select the porch and garage lights, set them to On and 100%, then tap Done.
  4. Optional: add a second automation, A Sensor Detects Something > Eve Motion, to turn on the garage light.

Tip: For the motion automation, set "Turn off after 5 minutes" so the lights don't stay on.

7. Plug-in reminder when you get home

A CarPlay or Bluetooth disconnect reminds you to plug in when the charge is low.

What you need

Setup

  1. Shortcuts > Automation > + > CarPlay (Disconnects), or Bluetooth (your Tesla, Disconnected).
  2. Add Show Notification: "Plug in the car?"
  3. Choose Run Immediately or turn off Ask Before Running.
  4. Use the Tesla app widget to check the state of charge at a glance.

Tip: Never run an EV charger through a smart plug. Use a properly installed Wall Connector.

8. Hands-free frunk or trunk by voice

Open the trunk with Siri when your hands are full of groceries.

What you need

Your iPhone with the Tesla app (and the Shortcuts app).

Setup

  1. Shortcuts > + > search "Tesla" > add Open/Close Rear Trunk (or Open Frunk).
  2. Name it "Open the trunk".
  3. Say "Hey Siri, open the trunk", or add it to the Home Screen or Apple Watch.
  4. On iOS 18 or later you can also add the Tesla Frunk control to Control Center.

Tip: Phone Key and Apple Watch Key still unlock the car as you walk up. This only saves you a tap.

Real-world examples

A UK blogger built a Time of Day automation that checks the outdoor temperature and starts preconditioning only outside a comfortable range, plus defrost when it is below freezing. They skip one weekday by choosing which days it repeats.

One owner says a Meross opener with Apple Home has worked reliably for years. Near home, an "open garage" button shows up in CarPlay, so they start the door before reaching the driveway.

A Model Y owner reminds people that the Tesla app's scheduled precondition works backwards from your departure time, so the cabin and battery are both ready when you walk out.

To keep the garage from opening when they arrive home on foot, a HomeKit user only lets it open when their phone is also connected to the car's Bluetooth. They do this with a virtual "driving mode" switch.
