Apple Home setup, step by step

  1. In the Home app, tap the Add (+) button, then tap Add Accessory.
  2. Scan the QR code or enter the 8-digit Apple Home code (Matter devices use an 11- or 21-digit code), or hold your iPhone near the accessory.
  3. If the device was already paired to another Matter app, tap More options and select it.
  4. When asked to add the accessory to your network, tap Allow. Assign a room and a name (Siri uses this name), then tap Continue and Done.
  5. Create Home scenes like "Away" (setback temperature) and "I'm Home" (comfort temperature).

Cabin Overheat Protection: keep a parked Tesla from baking

Cabin Overheat Protection is a Tesla setting that runs the fan, or the A/C, after you walk away so the cabin doesn’t turn into an oven in the sun. It sits next to your smart-home climate routines: the house handles itself, and the car looks after its own cabin while it’s parked. These steps follow Tesla’s Owner’s Manual and its Summer Driving Tips page.

  1. Open the setting. In the car, tap Controls > Safety > Cabin Overheat Protection. In the Tesla app, tap Climate, swipe up on the bottom menu, and choose a setting under Cabin Overheat Protection.
  2. Pick a mode. On runs the A/C when the cabin goes above 105 °F (40 °C), or the temperature you pick if your car and app offer that choice. No A/C runs only the fan to keep seats, the wheel and the screen from getting too hot, and uses less energy. Off turns the feature off.
  3. Garage parker? Turn on Exclude Home if your car shows it. The car then skips Cabin Overheat Protection while it’s parked at the address saved as Home in your Favorites.
  4. Leave it plugged in at home. Tesla says that when the car is plugged in, the charging system powers climate features instead of the battery.
  5. Know when it stops. It can take up to 15 minutes to start after you leave. It runs for up to 12 hours, or until the battery gets low (20% in some manuals, or the Low Power Mode threshold on newer software), whichever comes first. Expect some range loss when the car isn’t plugged in.
  6. Cool it right before you leave. For the drive itself, start climate from the Tesla app, a precondition schedule, or a Siri Shortcut like recipe 1, Warm Up Tesla. Set a cool temperature instead of a warm one. The Tesla app’s Shortcuts actions cover preconditioning and temperature. We haven’t found one for Cabin Overheat Protection, so set that in the car or the Tesla app.

Tip: If the setting won’t turn on, check Controls > Safety > Tilt/Intrusion. Tesla’s 2020–2024 Model Y manual says that alarm must be off for Cabin Overheat Protection to work. It only kicks in when the cabin gets hot, so on cold days it simply waits.

Not a pet or child mode. Tesla warns that the cabin can still get dangerously hot because of auto shut-off or extreme heat. Never leave children or pets in the car alone. Keep Climate On and Pet Mode are separate Tesla features that hold the cabin at a set temperature. Tesla says Pet Mode is only for short stops while you stay close by and watch the app.

Real-world example

In a list of Tesla tips, one owner suggests turning on Cabin Overheat Protection for hot days outside and starting the climate from the Tesla app before you walk out, so the cabin is already cool in summer or warm in winter. They add that it’s one more layer of safety and should never replace common sense. Another owner calls the fan-only No A/C option the low-energy middle ground that most people never try.

Scheduled Precondition: a warm car on wall power every winter morning

Tesla can have the cabin warm and the battery ready at the exact time you leave, every weekday, without you touching the app. Many owners still call it Scheduled Departure. On current software it lives under Schedule as Precondition and Charge. It pairs well with a smart home: the car readies itself in the driveway while the house runs its own morning scene. These steps follow Tesla’s Owner’s Manual and its Winter Driving Tips page.

  1. Save your Home location first. The Home and Work choices only appear once they’re saved in your navigation favorites. You can also use Current Location, but you have to be parked there to create it.
  2. Open Schedule. In the car, tap Controls > Schedule. You can also get there from the Climate or Charging screens. In the Tesla app, tap Schedule (Tesla says app version 4.34.5 or newer) and pick the location.
  3. Set Precondition. Tap Precondition and pick the time you want to drive away, plus the days. The car works out when to start so the cabin and battery are ready by then. Turn on Repeat Weekly. Without it, the schedule runs once and then switches itself off.
  4. Add a Charge schedule if it helps. Tesla says that in the cold, a charge that ends closer to your departure time means less energy is needed to warm the battery back up. If your utility has cheaper overnight rates, set a start time inside them. Check your rate plan first, because savings depend on it.
  5. Leave it plugged in. Tesla says that when the car is plugged in, preconditioning uses outside power instead of the battery, so more range is left for the drive. In deep cold a regular 120 V outlet may not keep up, but Tesla still recommends staying plugged in to keep the battery warm. When unplugged, preconditioning still runs as long as the car isn’t in Low Power Mode.
  6. Odd day out? For a one-off early start, use a Siri Shortcut like recipe 1, Warm Up Tesla. To warm the house on the way home, see recipe 11, Leave Work: Pre-Heat the House.

Tip: Schedules are saved per location, and Tesla says charge schedules are ignored at Superchargers and other fast chargers. If you see a blue snowflake on the screen or in the app, the battery is too cold for full power. Preconditioning, charging and driving all warm it up.

Real-world example

In a widely viewed thread of Tesla features most owners miss, one owner walks through setting a weekday leave time so the car warms the cabin and battery and finishes charging right when you walk out. He points out the difference from tapping climate on in the app: on a schedule while plugged in, the warm-up runs on wall power. Another owner tells the winter version: no more walking out to a frozen car and waiting for it to heat up while the range drops.
